All 112 children from key stage 2 (years 3 to 6) joined forces to present a show packed with Stone Age silliness, toe-tapping tunes and a heart-warming message about bravery and belonging.

The cast took centre stage at Retford Oaks Academy delighting parents, carers and staff with a full-scale musical performance of Rock Bottom, Craig Hawes’ brand-new prehistoric comedy. Since May, the children have been working with exceptional focus and enthusiasm to bring this production to life. From memorising lines and learning choreography, to crafting costumes and perfecting comic timing, their dedication has been nothing short of inspiring. Their teamwork has truly shown what young performers can achieve when given the chance to shine.

Set in the fictional town of Rock Bottom, the story follows young cave boy Bobby Cobblestone, played with charm and wit by Bobbie. When Bobby’s first invention catches the eye of glamorous celebrity Lady Lava – portrayed with flair by Mya H – he finds himself caught up in a bubbling mystery beneath the volcanic surface of the town. Supported by his spirited friends Coral (Lilly) and Cliff (Henry H), along with the ever-energetic Juans (Noah, Jakub and Bob), Bobby sets out to uncover the truth and save Rock Bottom before it blows its top.

The laughter and applause from the audience proved the show was a hit. But beyond the jokes and catchy songs, the production offered children the chance to grow in confidence, resilience and creativity. It was clear to everyone in the room that the experience will leave a lasting impression on both the performers and their proud families.

Team Thrumpton would like to express sincere thanks to the team at Retford Oaks Academy for their generosity and continued partnership. In particular, Mrs Rank deserves special recognition for her tireless support and enthusiasm. The opportunity to perform in a professional setting is something our children will never forget.

With big ideas, bold characters and boundless energy, our pupils truly rocked Rock Bottom – and lifted the roof while they were at it.
